Precision Documents ("we", "us", or "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you sign up via Clerk (our authentication provider), we receive your name, email address, and a unique user ID. We do not store your password — authentication is handled entirely by Clerk.

Documents you upload. When you upload a PDF, we extract its text content to send to our AI services for analysis. Uploaded documents are processed in your browser and are not stored on our servers. Extracted text is sent to third-party AI services only for the duration of each request.

Embeddings and chat history. If you use the document chatbot, we store vector embeddings of your document's content and your chat messages in our database so you can continue conversations across sessions. These are associated with your user ID.

Usage data. We log API request counts, token usage, and timestamps to monitor system health and enforce fair-use limits. This data is associated with your user ID.

Browser storage. We use localStorage in your browser to cache table-of-contents data, preferences, and session state. This data stays on your device and is not sent to our servers.

2. How We Use Your Information

To provide and improve the Precision Documents service
To generate AI-powered document analysis (table of contents, cross-references, impact detection, definitions, summaries)
To power the document chatbot with context from your uploaded documents
To enforce usage quotas and rate limits
To monitor for abuse and ensure system reliability
To respond to bug reports you submit

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Precision Documents:

Anthropic (Claude AI) — Processes document text to generate analysis. Text is sent via API and is subject to Anthropic's privacy policy. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train models.
Voyage AI — Generates vector embeddings of document text for the chatbot feature. Subject to Voyage AI's privacy policy.
Clerk — Handles user authentication and account management. Subject to Clerk's privacy policy.
Vercel — Hosts the application and runs serverless functions. Subject to Vercel's privacy policy.
Neon — Hosts our PostgreSQL database where embeddings, chat history, and usage data are stored. Subject to Neon's privacy policy.

4. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. Specifically:

Document embeddings and chat history are retained until you delete them or your account.
Usage logs are retained for up to 90 days for operational purposes.
Bug reports are retained until resolved and reviewed.

If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days.

5. Data Security

We protect your data using:

HTTPS encryption for all data in transit
Authentication tokens (JWT) for API access
Rate limiting and usage quotas to prevent abuse
Security headers (XSS protection, content-type enforcement, framing prevention)

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Delete your account and associated data
Export your data upon request
Object to processing of your data

7. Cookies

Precision Documents does not use tracking cookies. We use localStorage for functional purposes only (caching document data and user preferences). Clerk may set authentication cookies as part of the sign-in process.

8. Children's Privacy

Precision Documents is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice on our website. Your continued use of Precision Documents after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
